Health Impact Projections - check our interactive tool!

Welcome to our interactive tool!

What is the interactive tool telling us?

The tool visualizes the impact of various possible future events on mortality across European cities. Specifically, future climate, emissions, and policy scenarios defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and known as Shared Socioeconomic Pathways and Representative Concentration Pathways.

It shows data for 854 cities, the historical period of 1990-2019, and the projection period of 2020-2099. It stresses the significance of policies which help countries or communities adapt to changing environments and ultimately reduce the health risks.

What can we find out by navigating around?

  • Map Tab: Discover how climate impact varies geographically across Europe.

  • Rank Tab: Compare and rank cities or countries based on their projected impact.

  • All Data Tab: Access and download comprehensive datasets.

  • About Tab: Learn about key scenario concepts, impact measures definitions, and find all relevant links.

What can the interactive tool inform us about?

The tool visualizes how climate change and our reaction to it will affect human lives in urban settings, emphasizing the need for climate action and policy planning. It highlights the variation in impact across different European regions.

It shows a clear increase in net effect, with heat-related deaths increasing more than cold-related deaths decrease, particularly in Southern Europe.

It helps to identify regions and age groups most vulnerable to climate change, which can inform targeted policy and public health interventions.

What is new?

This tool visualises data obtained through an advanced multi-stage statistical framework that generates projected mortality values.

It offers an unprecedented level of detail and exhaustiveness while making the dense results visually engaging and interactive.
